Rare species

In the territory of the reserve (including Rustai town and the protected zone) 93 species of vertebrates listed in the Red Data Books of Russia and Nizhny Novgorod region have been reliably registered in different years.

In this list of animals the conservation status of the species is marked as follows: 

¹ - the species is included in the Red Data Book of the Russian Federation and the Nizhny Novgorod region; 

² - the species is included in the Red Data Book of the Nizhny Novgorod region; 

³ - the species in the Red Data Book of the Nizhny Novgorod region is included in category 3 (only key habitats are to be protected), and the reserve is not its key habitat; 

⁴ - the species needs special control over the state of the environment in the Nizhny Novgorod region (Annex 2 to the Red Data Book of the Nizhny Novgorod region).
