In 2001-2003, the reaclimation of the Russian desman (Desmana moschata) was successfully carried out in the Reserve.
In Kerzhents in the 30s of the twentieth century, there was often observed a Russian desman, which is now in the Red Data Book of the Nizhny Novgorod region, the Red Data Book of Russia and the Red Data Book of International Union for Conservation of Nature By the 80s of the twentieth century, this species had disappeared from these places, but fortunately not forever. In 2001-2002, the reserve's staff released into the floodplain lakes in the reserve's territory 50 Russian desmans caught in the Oka River floodplain. During the 2012-2013 census, the Russian desman was found in the water bodies of the Kerzhenets River floodplain both inside and outside the reserve.
The formed grouping is being monitored for some time.
